St Andrews Aquarium welcome new Sharks and Rays

January 2015

St Andrews Aquarium have welcomed an array of Sharks and Rays to take up residence in the brand new Great British Shark and Ray Tank. The new arrivals come after the Fife Aquarium said a fin-al farewell to their Black Tip Reef Shark, Sheila, who moved to Essex last month after she outgrew her tank.

The new tank, produced in partnership with the Shark Trust, will feature a display with lots of factual information about the Sharks and Rays and information about the future conservation challenges facing these native species as well as a chance to see the impressive Sharks and Rays up close in their new home.

The range of species joining the aquarium include Bull Huss and Smooth-hound Sharks, Thornback, Blonde, Spotted and Painted Rays. There will also be two Cuckoo Wrasse which is a brightly coloured fish found in the Mediterranean Sea.

The team at the aquarium are hoping that the new additions will settle in and get their teeth into their new surroundings quickly. John Mace, Manager of St Andrews Aquarium said: "We are delighted to be introducing some new additions over the winter months and we can see already that these new members of the aquarium family are going to fit in brilliantly. I’m sure the Smooth-hound Sharks and Rays will be as popular as Sheila was and will attract lots of visitors to the aquarium in the future."
