From bags to bulbs – Trust to benefit from plastic bag charges
November 2014
A top retailer will donate the cash raised from the new 5p plastic bag charge which has been introduced to its Scottish stores to conservation charity the National Trust for Scotland.
Family-owned variety retailer Wilko, which has nine Scottish outlets, will be donating funds raised from the 'single-use' plastic bag levy which was introduced by the Scottish Government in October.
It is thought that this could generate five figure donations for the charity which cares for some of Scotland’s most important heritage sites including Culloden Battlefield, St Kilda and Culzean Castle.
The funds raised will enable the Trust to carry out vital work to replace inefficient and expensive heritage lighting with state-of-the-art energy efficient LEDs at some of its most popular castles and houses across the country.
David McKinnon, Corporate Business Development Manager for the Trust, said: “The Trust is thrilled to be benefiting from the generosity of Wilko and its customers. The funds raised from plastic bags will go straight into energy-efficient bulbs at historic Trust properties, saving energy and money for the charity instantly.”
Katie Burney, charity officer at Wilko head office, commented: “We are very happy to be donating funds raised through the carrier bag charge to National Trust for Scotland.
“The charity plays an important part in the Scottish community and we’re sure the money will go a long way towards helping volunteers and employees continue their invaluable conservation work across the country.”
The National Trust for Scotland has been charging for plastic bags at its shops since 2008. The Trust’s bags are environmentally friendly - totally non-toxic and biodegradable, breaking down within 18 months.
