GLL strengthens sports team with appointment of new tennis manager
April 2015
GLL, the UK's leading charitable social enterprise has underlined its commitment to investing in and developing tennis within the leisure facilities it operates, by appointing Barry Cawte as GLL Tennis Manager. In his new role, which is co-funded by leading tennis charity, the Tennis Foundation, Barry will be responsible for devising and implementing strategic participation programmes at both a community and elite level across GLL-operated leisure centres. He will develop partnerships with local authorities and sports national bodies and work to recruit and train tennis coaches on behalf of the organisation. Barry has 14 years' experience working within the sports and leisure industry, including a four year stint as General Manager of Swansea Tennis where he managed tennis programmes across eight sites and delivered a Tennis Community Development Plan. Over the past 12 months he has also been involved with the Tennis Foundation as a consultant and mediator and has worked with centres in Nottingham, Liverpool, Leeds and Portsmouth to help improve participation and financial performance. Barry's appointment comes at a key time for GLL, which has seen massive expansion and diversification over recent years. It is now the UK's largest leisure operator and oversees the operation of over 150 public leisure centres and 27 libraries in partnership with around 30 councils, agencies and sporting organisations and employs more nearly 7,000 people. Barry Cawte comments: "It's an exciting time to be joining GLL and I'm very much looking forward to bringing a real tennis focus to many of its leisure centres. Tennis is a fantastic, fun and social sport and I will be working hard to increase participation and encourage people of all ages and fitness levels to give a try. I'll also be working in partnership with the LTA to develop pathways for talented young players who train at GLL-operated leisure centres and show potential for elite sport." Phil Lane Head of Sport Development at GLL added: "Barry has significant experience working within both the public and private leisure sectors. His track record and in particular his involvement with Swansea Tennis Centre, which is regularly used as a "Best Practice" centre by the LTA and Tennis Foundation, means that he is ideally placed to really add value to GLL's existing tennis offering." Geoff Newton Executive Director of the Tennis Foundation said: "The Tennis Foundation is delighted to support this post and we hope that Barry and GLL will encourage people from all parts of the community to start playing tennis in their local area."
