HRH The Duke of Rothesay visits The Black Watch Castle and Museum

August 2014

HRH The Duke of Rothesay paid his first visit to The Black Watch Castle and Museum last month, following the completion of a successful and much applauded redevelopment of the Museum and Balhousie Castle.

On arrival, His Royal Highness was welcomed by Lieutenant General Sir Alistair Irwin, the Chairman of Trustees of The Black Watch Museum Trust, before touring the new Museum and visitor facilities.

While touring the Museum, the Duke was able to see artefacts from the Museum collection that belonged to his Bowes-Lyon relatives, who served and were killed during the First World War. During the visit, the Duke met staff, volunteers, donors, serving members of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, Black Watch Army Cadet Force cadets and members of The Black Watch Association.

The Duke unveiled a plaque at the entrance to the redeveloped Castle and Museum. He planted a tree in the grounds to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, using a spade from the Museum collection once used by Her Majesty The Queen Mother.

Lieutenant General Sir Alistair Irwin said: "We are extremely proud that HRH The Duke of Rothesay is visiting The Black Watch Castle and Museum today. Following our Heritage Appeal, which raised over £3 million, the Museum embarked on a major redevelopment project in 2012 to expand the premises, provide new facilities for members of the Regiment and visitors, and provide a permanent home for the Museum and Archive collections.

"We reopened in June 2013 and we have had an excellent response to the new Museum from both local residents and visitors to Perth. We owe a very great debt of thanks to His Royal Highness who, as Patron of the Appeal and the last Colonel-in-Chief of the Regiment, did so much to encourage and support the project"

The redeveloped Museum has brought to life the remarkable and inspiring story of The Black Watch, the British Army's senior Highland Regiment. The galleries trace the history of the regiment through personal stories, fascinating artefacts and state of the art visual and interactive technology.

Throughout the year, the Museum hosts an imaginative programme of events and exhibitions covering a wide range of activities, including drop-in craft sessions and musical performances, a series of stimulating lectures and open days. Later this year, to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, the Museum will launch an inspiring and poignant programme of exhibitions, events and activities.

The redevelopment project has enabled the Castle and Museum to provide new, first class facilities for visitors including a dedicated education room, cafe and shop.
