New tours announced as 'The Mack' closed for restoration
July 2014
Following the recent fire, The Glasgow School of Art's world famous Mackintosh building will be closed for around 12 months to allow for restoration.
The GSA has developed a new 'Mackintosh at the GSA' tour which launched on 1st July. Seven tours will run daily starting at 10am.
Led by the GSA's award-winning student guides, the new hour-long tours give an insight into the Charles Rennie Mackintosh story at The Glasgow School of Art: from student to master architect and designer. They not only take in the Mackintosh Building but a number of hidden architectural gems in the local area which have a special connection with Mackintosh.
"Although entry to the Mackintosh building is not possible at the moment there is still much to see and enjoy from the exterior of this astonishing building," says Cathie Randall, General Manager of Glasgow School of Art Enterprises Ltd.
"Through our new tour visitors will be able to discover more about Mackintosh's ideas, inspirations, education and relationships."
The tours will begin at the Window on Mackintosh, the GSA's brand new visitor centre which opened earlier this year in the award-winning Reid building. Featuring a permanent exhibition that showcases The Glasgow School of Art's rich history since its opening in 1845, the Window on Mackintosh includes original artefacts, work by GSA alumni and records from the GSA's Archives and Collections. The visitor centre also offers a "Window on Mackintosh" in the form of models, photographs, films, animations, drawings and records detailing the design of the famous building as well as a striking view of Mackintosh's masterpiece.
Also located in the Window on Mackintosh is the GSA Shop. Products on sale include pieces by GSA staff and alumni - including contemporary jewellery, accessories and homeware - as well as gifts inspired by the Mackintosh building and the history of The Glasgow School of Art.
Complementing the new one hour tours, the GSA is once again offering two special two and a quarter hour City Walking Tours. Now in their third year, these popular tours give an in- depth experience. The Glasgow Style tour is an introduction to the achievements of Mackintosh and his contemporaries, and Art Nouveau style in Glasgow. Guides reveal the story behind the 'Glasgow Miracle' on the second City Walking Tour, investigating the development of the city's unique contemporary arts scene and Glasgow's remarkable creative regeneration.
