Full steam ahead at Verdant Works
April 2014
The Heritage Lottery Fund have approved Dundee Heritage Trust's Second Round grant application for £1.895m towards the High Mill Open Gallery Project at Scotland's Jute Museum @ Verdant Works.
This funding will allow the Trust to finally embark on this exciting £2.9 million project to complete the restoration of the remaining derelict buildings on the Verdant Works site and almost double the size of the museum.
The project will:-
* Sympathetically restore the 'A' listed buildings, creating a full height cathedral-like space to reveal the skeleton of the building and the monumental scale of the architecture
* Open up and improve access to the city's textile heritage by creating 971 square metres of new exhibition space
* See new themes interpreted including engineering, power and mill architecture
* Put significant new amounts of the museum's Recognised Collection of National Significance on public view
* Restore and display Leisure & Culture Dundee's 1801 Boulton & Watt beam engine, an internationally important object
* Establish a History Hub to help people with research into local or family history
* Create the 'Red Box' learning pod where a wide variety of groups can meet to take part in heritage-based activities
* Expand the schools programmes into the areas of science, engineering and technology
* Develop a vibrant programme of events including dance, drama, music and reminiscence work to engage diverse audiences
* Create a new post of Learning & Audiences Officer to deliver the schools and community programmes
* Provide exciting new volunteering opportunities
Gill Poulter, Heritage Director for Dundee Heritage Trust said: "We're delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has given us this significant level of support which is fantastic news for the Trust. The project gives us the opportunity to create something new and different that will have a dynamic future of its own but which is complementary to the existing jute museum, helping to protect and enhance it. We are incredibly grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund for supporting this project from its very beginnings, seeing its transformative potential and being as excited as ourselves about all the opportunities it presents."
Colin McLean, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund in Scotland, added: "This is an exciting time for Dundee as it develops as a cultural visitor destination so we are delighted that the heritage of the industry on which the town once thrived is playing a key role in that vision. Incorporating these last two buildings into the existing five star visitor attraction will complete the transformation of Verdant Works with a stunning new space for exhibits and museum events."
Supported by development funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund since last spring, the Trust has worked with a skilled professional team of curators, architects, designers and engineers to produce an innovative and unique scheme for the High Mill and Glazed Alley parts of the site. The plans are now very advanced so building work should commence by late May with the new development expected to open to the public in the summer of 2015.
